BACK TO ALL STORIES

Remote Vocational Training Scheme (RVTS) is a fellowship training program for Medical Practitioners in rural or remote locations, Aboriginal Medical Service, or Torres Strait Islander communities where accessing mainstream practice training is difficult. This scheme intends to retain doctors and allow them to continue providing services amongst rural and remote communities across Australia.

“RVTS reaffirms that Doctors working in rural and remote locations are doing a really important role by providing services and skills that many other doctors wouldn’t be able to provide to the communities. They are doing a really important job. We shouldn’t underestimate that.”—Dr Pat Giddings, RVTS CEO, GP & GP Obstetrician

RVTS Training

Practice training is provided through distance education and remote supervision, enabling RVTS registrars to practice in some of Australia's remotest locations while training towards the Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) and the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM). RVTS also delivers the Practice Experience Program (PEP) under the oversight of the RACGP.

By training with RVTS doctors become qualified GPs and Rural Generalists.RVTS is designed as a flexible training program to meet the doctor’s individual needs to encourage participants to continue providing medical services to the rural and remote community. The program is a fully government-funded program with remote supervision and educator support.

RVTS provides remote training on an ongoing basis via live weekly webinars, face-to-face workshops, clinical teaching visits, and remote supervision. It is a 4-year program with a curriculum that encompasses key areas related to remote practice. This includes clinical skills, nature of remote communities, public health, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health, management skills and professional networks, self-care and advanced skills training.

According to RVTS Ltd, registrars remain in one location for the duration of their training, and therefore the program is both community and family-friendly. RVTS has benefitted more than 100 rural communities since its inception in 2000. The program is renowned for its relaxed atmosphere, high-quality training and world-class administrative support that promotes a great experience for registrars.

RVTS has two streams of trainees:

·       The Remote Stream for doctors working in rural & remote Australia

·       The AMS (Aboriginal Medical Services) Stream, providing training for doctors working in Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services

Positions are available in both the Remote and AMS training streams.
