RACGP’s Remote Clinical Exam (RCE) - 2021

AMC, RACGP Remote Clinical Exam (RCE), GP Fellowship, FRACGP

BACK TO ALL STORIES

The Remote Clinical Exam (RCE) was introduced by the RACGP replacing the Objective Structured Clinical Exam (OSCE) in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. It is the final exam a GP must undergo to achieve Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (FRACGP).

The exam is delivered entirely remotely and therefore not impacted by COVID-19 restrictions, allowing all eligible candidates to complete this fellowship exam.

What is assessed?

The RCE is designed to assess the GP’s competency for unsupervised general practice in Australia. The candidates will be tested for their clinical skills they demonstrate on a replicated consultation.

The clinical skills assessed are grouped into the 10 Clinical Competencies. See further details in the RCE candidate module on gp learning and in the Candidate guidelines for the Remote Clinical Examination.

Exam Time and Duration

The exam consists of a total of 16 cases, each with a duration of about 2 and ½ hours including the pre-exam briefing. You will complete 12 cases over two sessions on two separate days. In case your competency has not been demonstrated, you’ll be required to complete another session comprised of additional four cases on day three.

If you are invited for the third day you will be receiving an email with an enrolment link with instructions. This additional day would cost you a fee of $1095 which should be paid before the results release.

For each case you will be provided with five minutes of reading time, and 10 minutes examination time. Five minutes is allocated between cases to allow for examiner marking, movement between the virtual exam rooms and for an ID check to be completed at each station.

How to Prepare for the RCE?

According to the RACGP, the best way to prepare for the clinical exam is to continue working in practice with patients. The RACGP recommends you to:

  • Complete the Introduction to the RACGP Remote Clinical Exam for Candidates module on gplearning which includes a number of resources - sample RCE cases, technical guide and marking rubrics;
  • Complete the guided exam preparation activity in the resources section;
  • Review each of the resources provided including the candidate guidelines for the RCE, tips for candidates and Zoom technical guide;
  • Practise using Zoom (including screen sharing using the remote-control function), and
  • Use the cases provided in the module - pair up with a study buddy and practise.

For more information on the Remote Clinical Exam, access the RACGP exam resources.
