The Australian Medical Council (AMC) and the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) are the two main bodies for registration.
For GPs from similar healthcare systems such as the UK and Ireland, the typical registration process takes around 8 to 16 weeks.
After registering, International Medical Graduates (IMGs) are subjected to Section 19AB of the Health Insurance Act 1973, which is also called the “10-year moratorium”.
This requires that GPs with international training work in a Distribution Priority Area (DPA) to receive Medicare billing.
This is not a barrier but rather a pathway.
Since all MMM2–7 sites are automatically categorised as DPA, IMGs have immediate access to thousands of roles throughout regional, remote and rural areas of Australia.
The Department of Health reviews and updates the DPA classification each year, and the March 2025 update introduces new catchment classifications for several states.

You can get a FRACGP in a structured 12 to 24-month program if you are evaluated to be similar to an Australian-trained GP at fellowship.
Remote Vocational Training Scheme (RVTS) - A government-funded program that provides remote supervision for vocational training. This allows GPs to train for FRACGP or FACRRM while staying in a single remote or rural area. With admissions in January and July, it takes 22 remote stream and 10 AMS stream physicians per year.
Pre-Fellowship Program (PFP) - This pathway took the place of MDRAP in April 2024. The PFP allows GPs who have not received VR training to obtain experience in DPA locations for a maximum of two years before enrolling in a formal fellowship program (FSP or ACRRM Independent Pathway).
AGPT (Australian General Practice Training) - This is a Commonwealth-funded and college-led program with 1,500 training spots available each year. Both the RACGP and ACRRM fellowship pathways are available. It is extremely competitive and is best for physicians who are just starting in general practice.
ACRRM Independent Pathway - For physicians studying FACRRM who choose a self-directed approach. This is more suited for those who are rural and remote generalists.
